Simon Katich has condemned his sending off of Travis Head to Mohammed Siraj and said the incident could ignite the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy, which is locked at 1-1 after two Tests.
Head and Siraj had a brief contest on the second day of the match in which Australia won by 10 wickets on Sunday. Head played a brilliant 140 off 141 balls before being bowled by Siraj, who gave him an aggressive send-off after an exchange of words.
After the encounter, the Indians had to endure from the Adelaide crowd.
“It’s a shame that Siraj’s mind has faded a bit… there’s no need for that in the game,” Katich told SEN 1170 Breakfast.
“He will regret that Siraj … was the spur of the moment and he was very sheepish long after he dismissed Mitchell Starc.
“It all happens in a split second and sometimes when you’re upset about what’s just unfolded it’s hard to control your emotions.
“You never know what head space some players are in sometimes … he was probably disappointed with his performance and something like that.”
Mohammad Siraj has been fined 20 per cent of his match fee, while Travis Head has also been “sanctioned” by the ICC for exchanging harsh words during the day-night Test. After a disciplinary hearing on Monday, Siraj and Head were found guilty of violating the Code of Conduct of the World Commission.
In a statement issued by the ICC, it is said, ‘Siraj has been fined 20 percent of the match fee after being found guilty of violating Article 2.5 of the ICC Code of Conduct for players and player support staff.
The cited rule deals with “using language, actions or gestures that are offensive or dismissive and may provoke an aggressive response from the batterer.”
The ICC said Head was also “sanctioned” for breaching Article 2.13 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel.
The five-match series between the two teams is tied 1-1 and the third Test will be played at the Gabba from Saturday.
