It was still the wee hours of the morning when Angel Cholka was awakened by the beam of police flashlights from the window. There was an officer at the door, who asked if someone named Madi was staying. He said that he needed to be examined. Chaulka ran into her 16-year-old daughter’s bedroom, confused and suddenly scared.
Cholka didn’t know that artificial intelligence-powered software run by a local school district in Neosho, Missouri, was tracking what Madi was typing on her school-issued Chromebook.
While her family slept, Madi texted a friend that she planned to overdose on her anxiety medication. The information was given to the head counselor of the school, who sent the police. By the time Cholka and the officer reached Madi, she had taken about 15 pills. They took him out of bed and took him to the hospital.
Thousands of miles away, around midnight, a mom and dad in Fairfield County, Connecticut received a call on their landline and couldn’t get there in time to answer. Fifteen minutes later, the doorbell rang. The three officers were asking to see their 17-year-old daughter, who had been flagged by monitoring software as an immediate risk for self-harm.
The girl’s parents picked her up and brought her down so the police could question her about something she had typed on her school laptop. It only took a few minutes to conclude that it was a false alarm – the language was from a poem she had written years ago – but the visit shook the girl deeply.
“It was one of the worst experiences of her life,” said the girl’s mother, who requested anonymity to discuss her daughter’s “traumatic” experience.
Among the array of artificial intelligence technologies entering American classrooms, few carry higher stakes than software that attempts to detect thoughts of self-harm and suicide. These systems spread rapidly during the COVID shutdown as many schools began sending laptops home with students.
A law requires these devices to be fitted with filters to ensure safe internet use, but educational technology companies – GoGuardian, Gaggle, Lightspeed, Bark and Securly are the big ones – also saw a way to address rising rates of suicidal behavior and self-harm. . They began offering devices that scan what students type, alerting school staff if they appear to be considering harming themselves.
Millions of American schoolchildren—closer to half, according to some industry estimates—are now subject to this type of surveillance, the details of which are disclosed to parents in an annual technology agreement. Most systems use algorithms or human review to figure out which words or phrases are serious. During the day, students may be taken out of class and checked; Outside of school hours, if parents cannot be reached by phone, law enforcement officers may visit students’ homes to check on them.
It’s impossible to tell how accurate these tools are, or measure their benefits or harms, because the data on alerts remains in the hands of the private technology companies that create them; Data on follow-up interventions and their outcomes are typically maintained by school districts.
Interviews with parents and school staff members suggest that alerts have, at times, allowed schools to intervene at critical moments. Often, they connect troubled students with counseling before they are at imminent risk.
However, alerts have unintended consequences, some of them harmful. Rights organizations have warned about privacy and equity risks, especially when schools monitor the online activity of LGBTQ+ students. Civil rights groups charge that surveillance technologies unnecessarily put students in contact with police.
As a mental health tool, filters get mixed reviews. There are many false positives, which can be time-consuming for staff and frustrating for students. And in some districts, after-hours visits to students’ homes have proven so controversial that they are scaling back their ambitions by limiting interventions during the school day.
Still, many counselors say the monitoring software is helping them achieve a cherished goal: to identify children who are quietly struggling, and reach them in time. Talmage Clubs, Neosho School District’s director of counseling services, said he is hesitant to suspend alerts even during summer vacation for ethical reasons.
“It’s hard to switch off,” he said. “I mean, the consequence of switching it off is that someone could die.”
Breaking the culture of silence
At Neosho, people credited the alerts, along with other changes like on-site therapy, with breaking the culture of silence surrounding suicide. About four years passed without a student committing suicide; One student died in 2022, and another this year. Jim Cummins, Neosho’s former superintendent, said he has no doubt that technology has contributed.
“Here if we save one life, 20 lives, there’s no way to save a life, but the statistics don’t seem to lie,” he said. “If someone came back six years later and said, ‘You can’t prove you saved a life,’ my answer would be, ‘No we can’t.’ But I know we did our best not to lose a single one.
The student who died in 2022 was Madi Cholka, the same girl who was dramatically rescued by police at her home in 2020.
During those years, Madi cycled through hospitalizations, and her mother, Angel, took elaborate measures to protect her, storing medicine and weapons in a lockbox.
That night, though, her mother was fast asleep when Madi texted a friend on her school Chromebook, saying she was planning to overdose. Alertness allowed Angel Cholka to take Madi to the emergency room and from there to a psychiatric hospital an hour north.
That hospitalization did not solve Madi’s problem. After she was released, she was trying to harm herself, and now she was careful not to type about her plans on her Chromebook. He died at the age of 17, leaving a suitcase packed for another hospitalization.
“I’m sorry,” he wrote in a text to his mother.
Still, Angel Cholka said, she was grateful for the Beacon Alerts, which took some of the burden off her during those years of vigilance. She hears arguments about students’ privacy, and intrusions into families, and dismisses them.
“I know for a fact — that alone kept my daughter here a little longer,” she said.
