Days after Ranchi MP and Union Minister of State for Defense Sanjay Seth received a ransom note demanding Rs 50 lakh, a 46-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the case. The accused, Minajul Ansari, a resident of Ranchi, was arrested on Monday morning and is being brought to Delhi on transit remand, a senior police officer said.
According to police sources, Ansari sent a message to teach his son-in-law a lesson.
According to police sources, the minister received the extortion message around 7 pm on Friday and alerted the Barakhamba Road police station and a swift investigation was launched under the leadership of SHO Mahavir Singh. Police traced Ranchi’s phone number and arrested Ansari.
During interrogation, Ansari admitted that there was a family issue behind his crime, police said. He claimed that his son-in-law was having an affair with his daughter and clashed with Ansari over the matter, leading to a scene.
Humiliated, Ansari claimed he was enraged and left home with his daughter. Later, he decided to take revenge. Police said that the accused used the phone and SIM card bought by his son-in-law in his own name to send messages to the minister.
“The accused wanted to take revenge on his son-in-law. He used the phone and SIM card bought by his son-in-law to send the threat,” the police source claimed.
Sources claimed that the accused sent a similar text to a Jharkhand MLA, but “the latter never checked it”.
