US President-elect Donald Trump has nominated Indian-American lawyer Harmeet K Dhillon as Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights at the Department of Justice.
Announcing the decision on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump said, “I am pleased to nominate Harmeet K. Dhillon as Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights at the U.S. Department of Justice.”
He lauded Dhillon’s career as a champion of civil liberties, saying, “Throughout her career, Harmeet has consistently stood up to defend our cherished civil liberties, including taking on massive technologies that censor our free speech, representing Christians who were prevented from praying together due to Covid, and Sue corporations that use vigilante policies to discriminate against their workers.”
Trump Highlighting his expertise in election law, noting, “Harmeet is one of the top election lawyers in the country, fighting to ensure that all, and only, legal votes are counted.”
The president-elect also emphasized his professional background, citing his education and early career. Trump added, “She is a graduate of Dartmouth College and the University of Virginia Law School and clerked for the United States Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals.”
He acknowledged Dhillon’s Sikh heritage, saying, “Harmeet is a respected member of the Sikh religious community. In his new role at DOJ, Harmeet will be a tireless defender.
