Here’s how OnePlus is tackling the green line issue on its smartphones Tech News

When you search for “green line issue” on the web, you’ll find hundreds of results highlighting how widely users have reported this problem. Those looking for help have turned to social media, Reddit, and even tech insiders for a quick fix to “green line” their smartphones. It wouldn’t be wrong to say that this issue has put handset manufacturers and the entire smartphone industry in a tough spot – after all, it has affected major smartphone brands, especially devices with AMOLED/OLED screens.

OnePlus smartphones have also been affected by green lines on their devices, and the company has not only publicly acknowledged the problem but is also working on a solution. Here’s how OnePlus is tackling the green line issue on smartphones.

What is the green line problem on smartphones anyway?

Green lines appearing on smartphone screens have become a common problem. In recent months, many users have shared complaints about this defect: a green line running vertically through the display, from top to bottom. Although the smartphone continues to function normally, the green line is prominent and flashing in the eyes.

While the exact origin remains unclear, the issue has affected smartphones across all segments, from high-end to mid-range and even lower-end devices. At first, many users believed that they accidentally dropped the phone or water damage caused the problem. However, as reports of the problem became widespread, it became clear that the green lines seen on smartphone displays were caused by a hardware defect, especially on smartphones with AMOLED/OLED displays. In some cases, the green line also faded over time, causing other colors to fade as well.

The green line is usually permanent and cannot be fixed through a software update. The issue has been widely reported, with instances of green lines on smartphones being particularly high in India.

“In India’s hot and humid conditions, some older AMOLED displays can wear out faster than others,” Ramagopala Reddy P, Vice President, OnePlus India, told selected media in Shenzhen, China recently. “Compared to LCD, AMOLED is a relatively new technology, so it may take time for the industry to identify large-scale problems. This problem is one of the reasons the industry only fully recognized it last year.”

What is OnePlus doing to address the green line issue on its smartphones?

According to Reddy, the Green Line problem is not a single cause but a combination of factors, including India’s climate. OnePlus’ solution to this hardware flaw is called the “Green Line Worry-Free Solution”. According to the company, it’s a three-pronged approach that includes an upgraded AMOLED screen, rigorous testing and enhanced service commitments. “We have made significant progress in display technology by collaborating with our partners and overcoming technical barriers,” said Reddy.

The brand’s solution is mainly focused on improving the edge-seal material and the process of AMOLED displays. It includes a high protection layer, internally known as PVX Enhanced Edge Sealing Technology, which provides exceptional resistance to weather and chemicals. Advanced edge sealing surrounds the metal components, which significantly reduces the rate of penetration of water and oxygen into the mobile phone.

“By incorporating this layer into our equipment structure, we increase the product’s overall durability and reliability, ensuring longer life and improved performance even in challenging environmental conditions,” he said. “Imagine that the edge of your display was originally protected by paper. With PVX Enhanced Edge Sealing Technology, we replace that paper with a metal shield, providing superior protection. That’s how we’re designing this product,” added Reddy.

Reddy claims that this new technology will help reduce the incidence of green line problems even in India’s extreme high-temperature and humidity environment. The brand is also doubling down on how it tests its smartphones internally. These sophisticated efforts complement PVX edge sealing technology, ensuring displays stay sharp and long-lasting.

“Our labs conduct rigorous tests on all our phones that exceed international standards,” said Reddy, adding that the testing process mimics the most extreme real-world scenarios to prove the durability and reliability of its phones.

For instance, its flagship OnePlus 13, which is set to launch in India early next year, has undergone more than 180 rigorous tests to meet durability and reliability standards. Reddy highlighted one such test, called the double 85 test, where the temperature is set at 85 degrees Celsius and the humidity at 85 percent. “This test is widely used in the electronics industry to assess the reliability of materials and components. It is a major part of our core aging test. We have done this test in the past, but now we do tests many times longer than before,” he said.

“Since we implemented this technology last year, we have made significant progress in reducing green line problems to industry-low levels,” said Reddy.

Lifetime warranty for Green Line issues

OnePlus assures that its new Green Line worry-free solution program and enhanced testing procedures will reduce the Green Line issues faced by consumers on its smartphones. To rebuild trust in the brand, OnePlus is now offering a lifetime warranty on all its smartphones, covering the Green Line issue.

This means that if your OnePlus phone – whether it’s a new model or an old one – develops this problem, the brand will replace the display free of charge.

Reddy also said that OnePlus now has a dedicated task force tasked with addressing quality issues to ensure future issues like the Green Line defect are avoided.
