OpenAI Unveils Canvas, ChatGPT | A tool for collaborative writing and coding with Technology News

On Tuesday, as part of its “12 Days of OpenAI” announcements, the generative AI leader added a new capability to ChatGPT called Canvas. Canvas is an interactive interface where users can interact with ChatGPT in real time. It allows users to edit, integrate feedback and further refine the content or code generated by ChatGPT.

“This is a game-changer for how people interact with AI, enabling deeper collaboration and unlocking new levels of creativity,” said Kevin Weil, chief product officer of OpenAI, in a YouTube video.

ChatGPT Canvas is available to Free, Plus, and Pro ChatGPT users through the GPT-4 model. However, free users will have limited access to this tool, which is designed to improve human-AI interaction. The tool can be accessed through the web and the ChatGPT desktop app for Windows.

Canvas enables collaborative editing, where both the user and ChatGPT can work interactively on a document simultaneously, with ChatGPT providing targeted feedback, as if two people were working on the document. Canvas can be quickly accessed from built-in shortcuts, which can also be integrated with custom GPTs.

Users can also get feedback on their essays. When the user inputs a sufficient amount of text in the prompt area, ChatGPT will add a canvas button in the upper right corner. Users can ask ChatGPT to comment on essays like a professor. It can annotate specific parts, making it easier for users to understand and incorporate changes. This also applies to computer programming code.

OpenAI engineers demonstrated Canvas by creating a children’s Christmas story, where the tool can also include emojis to entertain children.

As part of the “12 Days of OpenAI” announcements, the company has already introduced ChatGPT Pro, a premium subscription plan that unlocks ChatGPT’s full potential for $200 per month, followed by a fine-tuning research program. OpenAI has made Sora Turbo, its video generative AI model, open to Plus and Pro users.
