Manjeet’s brother Devinder Singh categorically denied the claim of suicide. “My brother was not involved in any illegal activities, nor did he take his own life. This is a conspiracy of the police,’ he alleged seeing blood near the white Scorpio car parked at the station.
Manjit’s family described him as a married man dedicated to steering the youth away from drugs. They called his death custodial murder and demanded that the culprit be suspended and prosecuted.
However, the police claimed that Manjit Singh used his licensed weapon while in custody. DSP Lakhwinder Singh Kler said that the youth was arrested on the basis of a tip-off and preliminary investigation revealed that he had committed suicide. He confirmed that the pistol was licensed and said that a judicial investigation was underway.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage, with villagers gathering outside Gharinda police station to demand justice for Manjit Singh.
