Bomb threats were received at seven places in Guwahati railway station and Guwahati University campus on Thursday, police said.
Guwahati Police Commissioner Digant Barah said the Meghalaya Police Control Room in Shillong had received a call that a bomb may have been planted at the Guwahati railway station.
“Accordingly, we have initiated an inquiry with the Meghalaya Police and have also taken precautionary measures at the station. We have not found any such item yet,” he said. PTI.
A “search and cleaning operation” at the station was jointly carried out by Guwahati Police, Government Railway Police (GRP) and Railway Protection Force (RPF).
Barah said that the Assam Police had also received an email claiming that bombs may have been planted at seven places on the university campus.
Tracing the origins of police emails
“It is not said that there is a bomb in the mail but the police have been asked to exercise caution in view of the possibility. We are trying to trace the origin of the mail,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Guwahati police along with the university’s security team have cleared the campus, but nothing has been found so far, the CP said.
Asked if the mail or phone call was linked to a banned outfit like ULFA (I), the officer denied any such possibility.
“Further investigations are underway to ascertain the details. We can’t say anything more now,” Barah said.
