A day after Lt Governor VK Saxena directed the Delhi Police Commissioner to initiate “strict action” against “illegal Bangladeshi migrants” living in the capital, the police on Wednesday launched a drive to crack down on such people.
The drive was conducted in various parts of the city, including Kalindi Kunj, Uttam Nagar, Shaheen Bagh and Jamia Nagar, where officials checked documents of people living in slums, footpaths and unauthorized colonies, police said.
“Some of them who do not have proper documents have been brought to the police station for questioning… If they are found to be illegal immigrants, they will be deported,” an official said.
“We are visiting colonies, slums and any other areas where we suspect illegal immigrants are living. We are checking their documents, whose documents are from states near Assam or Bangladesh… We are cross-verifying the details. A case will be filed under the Act and the country will be deported,” the official added.
Police said this was a routine practice. In the past, illegal immigrants – Nigerians or Bangladeshis – have been deported, they added.
The move came after a delegation of Hazrat Nizamuddin’s ulema (clerics) and Muslim leaders met LG VK Saxena on Saturday and expressed concern over the treatment of minority communities in Bangladesh and demanded strict action against infiltrators in the city, the LG’s office said. a note.
The meeting also directed the chief secretary to submit a weekly progress report on this matter and give a reply within the time limit.
