Five Indian biologists are among the 11 globally selected to join the global research network of the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO).

Bhavana Muralidharan, Institute for Stem Cell Science and Regenerative Medicine, Bengaluru, will work on her project – dissecting the molecular mechanisms of neuro-developmental chromatinopathies. Rajendra Motiani and Prem Kaushal from the Regional Center for Biotechnology, Faridabad will explore areas of skin pigmentation and tuberculosis. Understanding the laws of lifespan and host genetics will be demonstrated by Jogendra Singh of IISER, Mohali. Krishnapal Karmodia of IISER, Pune plans to study drug resistance and antigen variation in Plasmodium falciparum.

They join more than 700 biologists in this network. Established in 1964, EMBO supports young research groups in India, Taiwan, Chile and Singapore through four-year grants, in addition to opportunities to collaborate with European researchers. The aim of the international network is to facilitate local exchanges between researchers outside Europe and to provide access to use the laboratories and facilities of the core EMBO.

For the first time this year, Gavira Nkurunungi from Africa has joined the network.
