The Congress plans to nominate newly elected MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra as the first speaker for a special debate on the Constitution in the Lok Sabha on Friday. Sources said the decision was taken at a meeting of the Congress Parliamentary Strategy Group in Delhi on Thursday evening.
This will be Priyanka’s first speech in Parliament after winning the Wayanad by-election.
Discussions will be held for both Houses of Parliament – Friday and Saturday (Lok Sabha), Monday and Tuesday (Rajya Sabha).
On Thursday evening, Congress MP and General Secretary in-charge (Organization) KC Venugopal said that the Congress is happy that the constitution will be discussed in both houses.
“Leaders of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi and in the Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjuna Kharge, had asked the Speaker and the Speaker, respectively, to hold a debate on the Constitution in both Houses,” Venugopal said.
On November 2nd, the week-long deadlock in the parliament ended after the government and the opposition reached an agreement, which was reflected in the announcement of the date for a special discussion on the constitution in both houses.
In a meeting of all party leaders called by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, it was agreed that the government and opposition parties would hold a special discussion on the constitution in the winter session.
In this year’s Lok Sabha elections, the Congress made the Constitution and the perceived threat to it an electoral platform and saw its seats rise to 99 in the Lok Sabha.
