School Closed: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy rains in some districts of Tamil Nadu, due to which District Collectors of Villupuram, Tirunelveli (Nellai), Thoothukudi and Tenkasi have closed schools today (December 13).
After the cloudburst, schools were closed in districts like Chennai, Ramanathapuram, Dindigul, Pudukottai, Thiruvarur, Kanchipuram, Cuddalore and Tanjore on December 12.
The Thoothukudi district administration has issued a flood warning in Srivaikuntam and Iral areas following the flooding of the Thamirbarani river. People in Terai region have been advised to move to safe places.
In Chennai, the Public Works Department (PWD) has issued its first flood warning for areas near Redhills and Chemambakkam reservoirs, the city’s main source of drinking water. The warning has been issued after the water level has risen dangerously due to continuous rain in the catchment area.
Due to incessant rain in the upper part of Thamirbarani, flood warning has been issued in all the villages and towns on the banks of the river, according to the administration.
Revenue officials have been directed to evacuate people from all risk-prone places in Srivaikundam and Iral. Police and fire and rescue service personnel have urged people to evacuate to safety.
