Three decades and many breaks later, Suman, now a 52-year-old sub-inspector posted at the Delhi Police Academy, is as active an athlete as ever with two gold medals in shot put — one gold each in masters athletics — within five months. Suman credits her father, who is in the Haryana Police, for her achievements. “He always encouraged me to participate in sports events at police clubs. I graduated in sociology and represented my college in athletic meets as well. Karan Singh was my coach. He didn’t see girls except athletes,” says Suman. A year after completing her graduation in 1994, Suman Joined the Delhi Police and a year later she got married and gave birth to a son in 1996. I was completely away from sports.

In 2000, encouraged by her husband Jai Kishan, who was also a sub-inspector in the Delhi Police, she participated in the Delhi Police meet where she won gold in shot put and javelin and silver in discus throw. She qualified and participated in the All India Police Meet in 2001. But then a long hiatus followed as a career and children took priority.

After the marriage of his children, he turned his attention to athletics. A routine that included regular training exercises helped him turn back the clock.
