The high-level committee formed by the Supreme Court to negotiate with the farmers’ body protesting at the Shambhu crossing said on Friday that despite the court’s interest, it will take steps to open the highway and ease the movement of vehicles. A two-judge bench headed by Justice Suryakant asked the Center and Punjab governments to ensure proper medical assistance to agitating farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal.
The bench of Judge Ujjal Bhujan also asked him to provide medical treatment. “He should be given immediate medical attention without forcing him to break his fast…,” Justice Suryakant said. The bench held that Punjab and central government representatives met the protestors and Dallewal to impress upon them and the immediate priority should be Dallewal’s medical assistance.
It is “the binding duty of the Punjab Government and the Union to adopt all peaceful means to provide adequate, immediate medical assistance to Dallewal, without forcing him to break his fast, unless necessary to save his life,” the bench said. order
Meanwhile, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta and Punjab Advocate General Gurminder Singh agreed with the committee’s suggestion to try and persuade the protesters to change their location.
