A murder case was filed against Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan, his wife Bushra Bibi and senior party leaders in connection with the death of a paramilitary soldier during protests last month.
Three soldiers of the paramilitary Rangers were killed and another seriously injured when a car driven by a PTI supporter crashed during a protest in Islamabad.
A First Information Report (FIR) was filed at Islamabad’s Ramana police station on the complaint of a Rangers officer, who claimed that the entire incident was planned in Adiala Jail Rawalpindi, where Khan was lodged, The Express Tribune newspaper reported on Friday. .
The former prime minister and his wife have been named as primary suspects and PTI leaders including Ali Amin Gandapur, Umar Ayub, Waqas Akram, Salman Akram Raja, Murad Saeed, Zulfi Bukhari, Rauf Hassan, Hammad Azhar and others have been accused. Conspired to execute the plan, the report said.
The FIR alleged that the killing of the Rangers personnel was on Khan’s orders and with the involvement of senior PTI leadership. It said the plan was hatched in various meetings between PTI leaders and some inmates in the jail, and was intended to target the security forces.
The FIR identified several witnesses to the conspiracy, including inmates, laborers and secret police personnel inside the jail.
Additionally, Bushra Bibi and other party leaders incited people through video messages urging them to rise up against the army and the government, the FIR said. The PTI leadership has been accused of inciting rebellion and violence by calling for public unrest.
According to political experts, the new case could add to the worries of Khan, who has already faced nearly 200 cases. A large majority of them have been filed since his government fell in April 2022 after a vote of no confidence.
